The latest round of the C grade season saw us play in the plush surroundings of St Peters college. St Peters were top going into this game, so we were expecting another tough challenge.
The squad welcomed back Mike Fournakos for his first game after a long injury lay-off and Damien ‘the D train’ Simpson also found himself in the C’s due to work commitments later that day.
As the game got underway, St Peters wasted no time stamping their authority on proceedings. They were a very well organized team and their midfielders instantly caused us all sorts of problems with their movement and passing. Our defense appeared to be chasing shadows, with St Peters making good use of the width of the pitch. Zach (RB) and ‘the Godfather’ (LB) were under a lot of pressure when St Peters went forward and after less than 10 mins we went behind. A defensive mistake on the edge of the area saw us fail to clear the ball and lose possession, with Brinias caught off his line the St Peters striker had a simple tap in to an empty goal. 1-0 to St Peters.
We were in disarray at this point, struggling to keep the ball and allowing St Peters to get past us to easily as they went forward, before too long we conceded again. After some good build up through the middle, our defense was carved open by some slick passing. The St Peters forwards were given far too much space as they pushed into the box and sure enough they scored with a good shot into the left of the goal. 2-0 and too easy…
‘The Great Wall’ and Zach made way for ‘Lethal’ Cosma and ‘Baby Face’ Evangelou as we looked to stem the bleeding. Things improved slightly but at half time we were still 2-0 down.
After a tough day at the office, ‘el Jefe’ made way for the other Ferrrrrnando, as the team looked to improve on the first half performance. As the second half got underway, we looked much better. The team began to follow the coaches advice and started to pass the ball. ‘The Flash’ was having a good game on the right, and as the game wore on he saw more and more of the ball. We started to look like the better team towards the end of the game, gaining good possession and effectively preventing St Peters from having a chance to extend their lead.
Unfortunately we never really came close to scoring and when the ref blew full time it put us out of our misery.
Conceding 2 easy goals against a strong team like St Peters left us with a mountain to climb, we weren’t good enough.
Back to back losses have brought us back to reality with a thud. Next week we travel to Hahndorf, hopefully we can resurrect our season with a win.
